Types of oil production platforms

Once the exploratory drilling phase is over and geologists have determined that a petroleum reservoir is worth the massive expense, oil companies prepare to establish an offshore production platform. These rigs are designed to last decades, often far from land and in some of the most hostile waters on Earth. Oil can be drilled from the ocean bed in different ways. The platform on which the oil rigs rest, plays an important part in determining the output of the oil rig. Depending of the requirement, the oil rig platform is chosen. Let's have a look at the different types of oil rigs that can be used. Conventional fixed platforms, or FPs, can be constructed of steel jacket or concrete caisson. The former are rigs primarily made using tubular steel piled into the sea floor, whilst caisson rigs feature submersed oil storage tanks that allow them to be constructed in very shallow water, and then floated to their final position.

A subsea production riser consists of conductor pipes connected to offshore production platforms or FPSO and the flowlines/manifolds/wellheads on the seabed. It is also the primary devices of the floating production system to convey fluids to and from vessels. It is one of the most complex aspects of a deepwater production system.

At the present time, more than 9,000 offshore platforms are in service worldwide, operating in water depths ranging from 10 ft to greater than 5,000 ft. Topside payloads range from 5 to 50,000 tons, producing oil, gas, or both. A vast array of production systems is available today (see Fig. 1). The concepts range from fixed platforms to subsea compliant and floating systems.

Let’s have a look at the different types of offshore production platforms that a company can choose from. Fixed platform. This platforms are meant for deep sea drilling. The platform is formed of concrete and steel. Tons of material is required in constructing this type of platform. They can operate at a depth of 1500 or less.
